With the holiday season fast approaching things have already gotten busy. We've been seeing holiday decor in stores for a while now and I actually heard Christmas music playing at the grocery store this week! It won’t be long until it’s time to hunt for parking spots and join the mad dash to buy gifts.
But before that happens, I want to know - What happened to Thanksgiving?! Why do people by-pass this special holiday? Thanksgiving is our most neglected holiday. Even looking for Thanksgiving decorations yields little more than paper plates and turkey-adorned napkins located off in a far store corner.
Thanksgiving is more than just a day off from work. It's more than being the day we eat turkey and take naps in the middle of the day. It’s more than when TV is dedicated to football all day.
Thanksgiving is so important though. Christmas and Easter are to recognize utmost importance in the life of Christ and what His life and sacrifice means to us. But Thanksgiving is about telling God that we know Who is in control, we know Who is protecting and caring for us. We know Who our blessings come from.
It’s really a personal holiday. Maybe that’s why it’s so neglected by society as a whole. There’s no way for someone to make a buck out of it besides selling that illustrious turkey dinner and all the trimmings. Yes, we get together to celebrate with family and friends, but it’s still a personal thing.
It really doesn't take much to spend a moment talking with God, telling Him we’re grateful that He values us so much. You don’t need special foods or entertainments to participate. Nothing fancy is required because when it comes down to it, it’s simply saying “Thank You” to our Heavenly Father who loves each and every one of us so much that He gave His own Son’s life for our sake.
Isn’t that worth the effort to not by-pass one special day set aside for just such a purpose? If you don’t get to attend church for Thanksgiving, or sing those wonderful Thanksgiving songs or do any of the other things we think of when Thanksgiving comes around each year, then just take a moment out of your busy life to let Him know how much you appreciate what He’s done for you this year!
Last Sunday morning we were still experiencing the effects of Hurricane Sandy. Because of that, many members of our congregation missed a great service.
This Sunday promises to be a cool, crisp Autumn day, and a perfect start to our Thanksgiving season. It's also Communion Sunday and we invite you to come partake in the Lord's Supper with us. Sunday School starts at 9am followed by the Worship service at 10am. We look forward to seeing you!
